I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother-loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful.
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way.
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us.
Suddenly, warning bells began to sound in my head. (我的不祥预感)With butterflies in my stomach, I opened the trunk, only to findit was nowhere to be seen. (果然帐篷不见了)However, father and brother just shrugged because it was left in the charge of mother.(大家对妈妈的好忘习惯了)Mother made a face to us and then drove back immediately, which made us burst out laughing.(妈妈逗乐了我们并去取)Afterthe tent was fetched, we examined all the items carefully before we left for the destination.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way.
Every time we reached a new place, Mother almost jumped with joy like Columbus who discovered the New World. (衔接句,妈妈每到一个地方的开心)Needless to say, the rest of the journey still witnessedher leaving her album, key and so on. But she always amused us by singing and joking to make up for her mistakes. (妈妈一路上忘记种种,并一直逗我们开心)Luckily, we arrived home safe and sound. Tired as we were, the fun mom’s forgetfulness brought left a deep impression on us and would stay in our memory forever.(点名主旨,妈妈的性格让我们的旅途记忆更加难忘)(157)
People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith 的一家:Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of the idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
Then she ordered a second-hand popcorn machine online without any hesitation. (买机器)Upon its arrival, they couldn’t wait to study how to operate the machine. Thank God! Tried out for hours,it worked out far better than expected. (试验成功,可以顺利生产爆米花)They immediately visited Bernard’s family and shared with them their popcorn plan with anticipation. (告知Bernard)With tears of gratitude,Bernard bowed to Mrs. Meredith and then got down toproducing popcorns. (Bernard的感激)
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
But to ensure Bernard’s success, Mrs. Meredith kept him companyand called on passers-by totaste the popcorn. (Mrs. Meredith陪他一起去卖)Though on tight budget, people were more moved than surprised to see such a little poor boy’s efforts to feed his family, buying a bag or two with delight eventually. (善良的人们来慷慨解囊)Soon, his pockets were full of money. “I make it. I make it.” Bernard threw himself intoMrs. Meredith’s arms. (卖掉爆米花的兴奋)How grateful he felt forMrs. Meredith’s family that taught him to fish! It is love thatmakes the world go round.( 点题) (157 words)
练习:
1. It was the old lady’s birthday. She got up early to be ready for the postman. Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work for the aged.
The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed pleased to live with her mother, and worked in a primary school around the corner. One evening, however, Enid said, “I’ve arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital—just a ‘minor’ operation, I’ll soon be home.” In the morning she went, but never came back—she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral (葬礼), and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast. That was two years ago, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps—perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present, for example something like a parcel. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited—like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. The neighbor downstairs had made a cake for her. The little boy upstairs, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints (薄荷糖), saying he wouldn’t go out to play until the post had come. “I guess you’ll get lots and lots of lovely presents,” he added, “I did last week when I was six.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Paragraph 1:
She stood by the window, watching.
Paragraph 2:
Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open.
Myra herself had got a medal for her work for the aged.
Paragraph 1:
She stood by the window, watching.
Golden sunlight danced in her white hair and Johnnie’s laughter floated in the air. She stared at the end of the road, hoping the postman would come earlier. It seemed as if she had been standing there for a century.
Suddenly, a spark of delight glittered in her eyes when she caught sight of the postman. Then came the knock.
But soon her delight faded away when the postman only gave her an envelope.
“No parcel? Or anything else?” “No, madam. Have a nice day! Bye.” Disappointment gradually covered her face.
Paragraph 2:
Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open.
A thin paper fell down and there was only a single line, “Mom, go downstairs. I have a birthday gift for you.”
With a mixture of confusion and expectation, she went downstairs. Her eyes lit up with pleasure the moment she saw in her garden stood her lovely daughter, Myra, smiling at her. Tears rolled down when Myra ran towards her and hugged her tightly.
3.点题:
“Mum, do you love your present?” “Of course, I love you.” she replied with a satisfied and sweet smile.

2.
Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then-bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕)frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries.
But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
Paragraph 1:Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.
Paragraph 2: On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week.
Paragraph 1:Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. My son frowned, “Why did you do that? You know five dollars can buy me another yoghurt.”Staring at him gently, I stroked his head and told him that the man was hungry and the money at least could help him get through this cold night. At this, he was lost in thought. After a moment of silence, a slight smile played across his face. He said in a firm voice,“Wait a moment. I will do something for him.”
Paragraph 2: On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done. The next minutes witnessedhim getting off the car and running over to him. “This is for you.” He handed him his favorite yoghurt, looking at him sincerely. God! I couldn’t believe my eyes, my jaw almost dropping. The man hesitated for a while before he took it. I suddenly saw the tears of gratitude shining in his eyes.My rough and gloomy days brightened because my boy did learn to pass on kindness. Cold as it was, I felt a stream of warmth running through my body.(177)
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Why are you so generous to a stranger while mean to me?” he questioned, upset. Looking back at those big eyes, I smiled, “Don’t you think it worthwhile to spend what a cup of yoghurt costs helping a homeless man survive this freezing weekend?” Hearing it, my son looked down at the yoghurt in his hand, nodded slowly and said nothing. But just before I got the car started, he patted my shoulder, “Mum, wait a minute!”
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. With a determined look, my little gentleman opened the car door, stepped straight to the poor man and handed him his favorite yoghurt. Hands trembling, the man took the gift, a warm smile spreading. When my little gentleman came back proudly, I spotted a middle-aged man stopped to give the beggar some coins and so did a woman and her daughter. In the cold wind kindness spread. Having settled on the back seat, my son suddenly whispered, “Could you please draw a picture of a cartoon boy riding a skateboard with me tonight?” With a mixture of pride and guilt, I agreed. What a priceless yoghurt I bought! (195)
